Sensory Integration
Frequently Asked Questions

Who will benefit from using the Sensory Belt™?
Anyone facing the challenges posed by Autism, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Angelman syndrome, Apraxia, Aspergers syndrome (AS), Ataxia, Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, Dyslexia, Fetal Alcohol syndrome (FAS), Hypotonia, Peripheral Neuropathy, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD-NOS), Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), Rett syndrome, Sensory Integration Disorder (SID), and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) will benefit.

How does the Sensory Belt work™?
The Sensory Belt stimulates the proprioceptive system through nerve receptors that are positioned in the muscles, joints and ligaments around joints. These receptors sense tension and pass this information to the brain where it is processed. The brain responds by signaling the muscles to contract or relax creating improved awareness through a stronger neuro-muscular connection with the brain.

What is Proprioception?
Proprioception is the sense of position and movement of the limbs and the sense of muscular tension. The awareness of the orientation of the body in space and the direction, extent, and rate of movement of the limbs depend in part upon information derived from sensory receptors in the joints, tendons, and muscles. Information from these receptors, called proprioceptors, is normally integrated with that arising from vestibular receptors (which signal gravitational acceleration and changes in velocity of movements of the head), as well as from visual, auditory, and tactile receptors. Sensory information from certain proprioceptors, particularly those in muscles and tendons, need not reach consciousness, but can be used by the motor system as feedback to guide postural adjustments and control of well-practiced or semiautomatic movements such as those involved in walking.

What is Sensory Integration?
Sensory Integration (SI) is an innate neurobiological process which refers to the integration of sensory stimulation, within our environment, by the brain. Our brain allows us, without conscious thought, to take in information from our senses, organize it and make a plan to produce a meaningful response so we may interact within our environment. The senses which are the most obvious are those of taste, touch, sight, hearing, and smell. The hidden senses are those of movement (vestibular or inner ear) and of body position in space (proprioception). These hidden senses are the regulators of our nervous system and help build the foundation for purposeful movement.

What is the Sensory Belt™ made of?
Using the latest in foam technology, we have created a comfortable, safe and durable line of Sensory Belts. The Sensory Belt consists of EVA foam for flexibility and stability along with neoprene weight pouches filled with small stainless steel balls. The Sensory Belt was specifically designed with non removable weight to protect both you and your child. The weight provided in all Sensory Belts has been extensively tested and is proven to be the most effective for your child's size and weight. The Sensory Belt is a patented product.

How long will it take to see Results?
Most will experience immediate and dramatic results while others will experience a gradual increase in awareness over time.

How do you recommend we introduce the Sensory Belt™ to our child?
A popular way to introduce the Sensory Belt is to explain to your child the belt was designed with them in mind. You might even tell your child this is your “special belt” and will make you feel better. Another way of introducing the belt, particularly to boys, is to let your child know the first weighted belt (Balance Pro SportBelt) was designed by a professional baseball player to help athletes improve their balance.

Note: Be aware if your child doesn't feel well as this might cause them to be resistant to wearing the belt.

How long should I wear the Sensory Belt™?
We recommend you initially use the Sensory Belt for 15 minutes. The Sensory Belt may be worn from 15 to 30 minutes to all day. Your may prefer to wear the belt over your lap while eating. Parent supervision is recommended when children are wearing the belt.

Note: The amount of time your wear the belt may vary from day to day.

Is the Sensory Belt™ safe?
Absolutely! The latest advancements in foam manufacturing were incorporated into the design of the Sensory Belt, along with quality workmanship, ensuring the Sensory Belt is the most durable, comfortable, and safe sensory integration products for all ages.

Has the Sensory Belt™ been tested?
Our initial testing was done by occupational and physical therapists at Community Haven for Adults and Children (CHAC) in Sarasota, Florida http://www.chachaven.com. The wildly successful introduction of the Miracle Belt into their sensory therapy rehabilitation program has greatly improved the quality of rehabilitation sessions by allowing the therapists to make the most of their precious time with each child. Specifically, wear of the Miracle Belt & Sensory Belt helps calm, improve balance, and increase awareness regardless of the sensory need. The findings of CHAC are consistent with feedback from practical application from behavior therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, teachers, and parents.

Why is the Sensory Belt™ the most effective sensory aid?
There are a number of reasons why the Sensory Belt is more effective than other weighted sensory aids. Having the weight of the belt centered around the mid section of the body helps provide a more stable base of support improving balance, coordination, and posture. Other weighted sensory aids, such as weighted vests, have been found to negatively effect posture due to their inability to bring the body into a balanced and upright position. The Sensory Belt is the most comfortable, safe, and durable line of weighted belts on the market today.

What is the difference between the Sensory Belt™ and Miracle Belt™?
The only difference between the Sensory Belt and Miracle Belt is the size. The Sensory Belt is specifically designed for children, teens, and adults who weigh more than 75 pounds. The Miracle Belt is specifically designed for children who weigh less than 75 pounds. Both the Sensory Belt and Miracle Belt are available in three sizes.
